NorCal Buffs – Watch Parties 2010

cu-csu-game-at-jones-31-aug-2008-028.jpg

VOTE HERE - http://poll.fm/1wh0p

We are also looking for feedback from the local Alumni on our watch parties. Please use the comments area of this post if you would like to add further detail.

Specifically we want to know
– Do we want to watch games at Bayside or The Rupublic (was Jones)?
– Are there other regions interested in organizing a location this coming season?

A little history on our SF locations for those who might be new to the area.

Bayside Sports Bar – Going back several years, Bayside Sports Bar on Union St was our spot. We fought for space as the bar was shared by Michigan, USC, CU and several others, they also did not provide CU drink or food specials, but for the most part it was a great location. Unfortunately, Bayside closed in 2007 but is planning to re-open this summer. In our talks with the new mangement, we would likely have to share space with University of Arizona alum for 2010 but they would work with us on speicals.

Jones (now The Republic) – In looking for a new space following Bayside, Jones on Lombard was convenient for those who live in the Marina, was big enough for our crowd (which can get to 200+ fans) and put together some great specials for us. The downside was that USC began to watch their games there as well causing challenges for us during a few games. Last June we learned that Jones was to be purchased and become the Republic, which did not open until the football season was almost over so we had to find a new home again. New management at The Republic is willing to work with us on space and specials should we feel this would be a good home for CU alum this year.

That said – we want your feedback on 2010 and we will do our best to make sure we all have a great time here in San Francisco and elsewhere for those outside of SF.

Buffs are 3-0 for the First Time Since the 2004 Season!!!

How about those Buffaloes!!! An OT win on a windy night under the lights at Folsom with a score of 17-14! This was CU’s first win against a ranked team since the Oklahoma win last year. CU jumped out early with a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Hawkins threw a dart to wide receiver Josh Smith for a 38 yard touchdown. Moments later, after a West Virginia fumble was recovered, Pat Devenny caught a 13 yard TD pass from Cody to give the Buffs a 14-0 first quarter lead.

Then it was West Virginia’s turn to go on a 14-0 scoring run in the 2nd and 3rd quarter to tie the game and put the Buffs in OT for the finale! CU defense held West Virginia to a field goal attempt which would have put the Mountaineers up by 3, but a close kick from the left hash mark sailed left and clanged against the upright and was NO GOOD!! After CU ran 4 plays, Aric Goodman came in for the game winning kick and gave the Buffs the 3 point victory and gave the fans a chance to storm the field and celebrate with their team!

CU’s balanced attack was highlighted by new-comer Rodney Stewart who had 28 carries for 166 yards on the ground.  Cody Hawkins threw for 179 yards with 2 TD’s and 1 INT.

The San Francisco Watch Party at Jones Sports Bar was also a huge success! We brought in hundreds of CU alumni and JONES brought in the Coors Light Girls and created satellite bar stations to keep the beer flowing throughout the game. CU fans drank nearly 100 cases of beer and 8 kegs!

Colorado is JONES’ number 1 crowd and they will continue to be our bar of choice for the entire football season! TV upgrades will be present for the upcoming CU – Florida State game!

THANK YOU to all of you who purchased a NorCalBuffs T-Shirt!!! We sold over 60 shirts at $20 each.  100% of the proceeds go back into our local Northern California Alumni Club. Funds will be used to discount future events and a portion will go towards a matching scholarship to a Northern California high school senior attending Colorado as a freshman.

Buffs Prepare for West Virginia THURSDAY NIGHT Game 18 Sep 08, 5:30 PM (PST)

CU and West Virginia both had bye weekends as they prepare for play this Thursday at Folsom Field. Colorado (2-0) dropped in the USA Today’ Poll two spots to #42, while WV (1-1) moved up two spots to #22. Colorado is also a 3 point underdog in this Thursday’s game.

This past weekend, the BIG XII remained at the top of the leader’s board among BCS conferences with a 6-2 record (Kansas lost to South Florida as time expired and Iowa State lost to instate rival Iowa). Overall the BIG XII has a 28-4 record which is the nations best conference record! The BIG XII also has 4 teams in the Top 10, plus Kansas at #19, Nebraska at #28, Oklahoma State at #31, and Colorado at #42.

This Thursday’s game will be CU’s first game on Thursday night in 18 years! Thursday will also be a BLACKOUT game at Folsom Field where all Buff fans will be wearing black, much like last year against Florida State.

This game will be nationally televised on ESPN and will be the Buffs first game against a Top 25 team!

The San Francisco Watch Party will again be at JONES Sports Bar in the Marina District of San Francisco:

URL: http://www.jones-sf.com/index_flash.html

Address: 2400 Lombard St (at Scott St.), San Francisco, CA 94123 (415-440-2000)

Our last Watch Party held At JONES Sports Bar on 31 Aug 2008 was larger than expected. The JONES staff was under prepared for the estimated 400+ CU alumni and friends that watched the game. JONES said that they had 200+ on Saturday for the USC-Virginia game and the bar was pretty packed, but the CU crowd dwarfed the USC crowd to the point that the bar RAN OUT OF BEER. They had to make a beer run to Safeway just to have bottles to hand out to Buff fans!

Of course this upset both CU fans and the bar owners. Thus, the management team promises to be prepared for our large CU crowd for ALL Future games! They will have additional bartenders, servers, and kitchen staff and have LOWERED their prices to CU BUFFS only (not other schools):

$10 Coors Light and Bud Light Pitcher

$14 Blue Moon Pitchers

$13 Bud or Bud Light Buckets

$5 Margaritas

$5 Yeager Bombs

$10 Burger, fries and beer combo

Rest of the food menu will remain the same

In addition to the specials above, JONES will also have:

3 Satellite bars + Main bar
12 additional servers
15 kegs
50 cases of beer

CU Goes 2-0, While the BIG XII Goes 12-0 For the First Time in History 6 Sep 2008

colorado-buffaloes.gifbig-xii.jpgeastern-washington-university.jpg

Colorado earns another win to become 2-0 on the season, while the entire BIG XII went 12-0 for the first time in history, thus cementing the conference as the TOUGHEST college football conference in the country!!!

The Buffs overcame a 21-7 halftime deficit to win the home opener by a score of 31-24. Perhaps the Buffs were looking ahead to the West Virginia night came coming up on Sep 18th, or maybe Eastern Washington was just better than the Buffs expected. Either way, Colorado pulled their game together in the 2nd half to outscore EWU by 24-3.

CU Wins Season Opener at Investco Field Against the CSU Rams 31 Aug 2008

DENVER - AUGUST 31: Fans of the University of Colorado Buffaloes support their team against the Colorado State University Rams at Invesco Field at Mile High on August 31, 2008 in Denver, Colorado. Thank you for the 400+ CU alumni who showed up with CU PRIDE at JONES Sports Bar for the DOMINATION over the CSU Rams!!!

DENVER - AUGUST 31: Josh Smith #1 of the University of Colorado Buffaloes celebrates 93 yard kick off return for a touchdown with Cody Hawkins #7 against the Colorado State University Rams at Invesco Field at Mile High on August 31, 2008 in Denver, Colorado.John Nosure #7 of Colorado State returned the ensuing kick off for a touchdown against Colorado. CU has got a nephew-uncle tandem with Freshmen sensation Darrel Scott (#1 recruited high-school running back)  and his uncle, Josh Smith who ran back a 93 kick-off return for a touchdown!

Scott, who rushed 12 times for 50 yards and a TD set the tone for things to come but his uncle, Josh Smith, took over the game with a combined 189 yards and a TD of his own to seal the win for the Buffs! Smith scored CU’s first kick-off return for a TD in 5 years. The last time this happened was when CU sensation Jeremy Bloom ran one back for 88 yards against K-State in 2003.
Although this is the last game to be played at Investo Field with 69,619 fans in the near future (2009 at Folsom Field, 2010 at Fort Collins), we finished the series with thumping of CSU.

CU Watch Parties will be held at JONES Roadhouse Bar & Restaurant for the 2008 Football Season! FIRST GAME SUN 31 AUG 2008, 4:30 PM (PST)

jones-logo.jpgcu-csu-rocky-mountain-showdown.jpgjones-logo.jpg

The NorcalBuffs Alumni Club have struck a deal with JONES Bar & Restaurant (San Francisco) to host our CU Watch Parties this fall! (located at the former location of the Marina Sports Bar)

cu-csu-photo.JPG

URL: http://www.jones-sf.com/index_flash.html

Address: 2400 Lombard St (at Scott St.), San Francisco, CA 94123 (415-440-2000)

As many of you know, our old standby, Bayside Sports Bar, closed its doors after the Super Bowl this past February. We solicited our alumni for new bar locations to watch games and received dozens of ideas. Many great alternatives made the list but most of these bars already had established relationships with other alumni clubs in the area. This greatly narrowed down our choices.

After talking with the owners of JONES, we realized that this bar/restaurant would be able to accommodate our needs.

JONES will be giving CU alums the open left room (the front left room as you walk in) with several large flat screen TVs, booth & table seating, and just a shout away from the bar. This area can seat dozens and has standing room for many more!

JONES will also be setting up special drink specials for CU fans. We will most likely have it set up if you wear any CU gear (t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, etc…) you get the drink specials. So wear your BLACK AND GOLD!!!

  • $12.00 Bud Light Pitchers
  • $15.00 Bud or Bud Light buckets

JONES also has an extensive food, cocktail, and wine menu compared to most bars in town. So along with your drink specials, you can order a great meal!

So get the word out! All CU Watch Parties will be held at JONES this fall!

Speaking of football, the Buffs again have one of the toughest schedules of the year, playing 7 teams that went bowling last year (all times are in local Pacific Standard Time):

  • SUN 31 Aug 08: 4:30 PM: Colorado State at Denver’s Invesco Field (Rocky Mountain Showdown) (FSN)
  • SAT 06 Sep 08: 12:30 PM: Eastern Washington at Boulder
  • THU 18 Sep 08: 5:30 PM: West Virginia at Boulder (ESPN)
  • SAT 27 Sep 08: TBA: Florida State at Jacksonville, FL
  • SAT 04 Oct 08: TBA: Texas at Boulder (Homecoming)
  • SAT 11 Oct 08: TBA: Kansas at Lawrence, KS
