CU Watch Parties will be held at JONES Roadhouse Bar & Restaurant for the 2008 Football Season! FIRST GAME SUN 31 AUG 2008, 4:30 PM (PST)

jones-logo.jpgcu-csu-rocky-mountain-showdown.jpgjones-logo.jpg

The NorcalBuffs Alumni Club have struck a deal with JONES Bar & Restaurant (San Francisco) to host our CU Watch Parties this fall! (located at the former location of the Marina Sports Bar)

Address: 2400 Lombard St (at Scott St.), San Francisco, CA 94123 (415-440-2000)

As many of you know, our old standby, Bayside Sports Bar, closed its doors after the Super Bowl this past February. We solicited our alumni for new bar locations to watch games and received dozens of ideas. Many great alternatives made the list but most of these bars already had established relationships with other alumni clubs in the area. This greatly narrowed down our choices.

After talking with the owners of JONES, we realized that this bar/restaurant would be able to accommodate our needs.

JONES will be giving CU alums the open left room (the front left room as you walk in) with several large flat screen TVs, booth & table seating, and just a shout away from the bar. This area can seat dozens and has standing room for many more!

JONES will also be setting up special drink specials for CU fans. We will most likely have it set up if you wear any CU gear (t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, etc…) you get the drink specials. So wear your BLACK AND GOLD!!!

  • $12.00 Bud Light Pitchers
  • $15.00 Bud or Bud Light buckets

JONES also has an extensive food, cocktail, and wine menu compared to most bars in town. So along with your drink specials, you can order a great meal!

So get the word out! All CU Watch Parties will be held at JONES this fall!

Speaking of football, the Buffs again have one of the toughest schedules of the year, playing 7 teams that went bowling last year (all times are in local Pacific Standard Time):

  • SUN 31 Aug 08: 4:30 PM: Colorado State at Denver’s Invesco Field (Rocky Mountain Showdown) (FSN)
  • SAT 06 Sep 08: 12:30 PM: Eastern Washington at Boulder
  • THU 18 Sep 08: 5:30 PM: West Virginia at Boulder (ESPN)
  • SAT 27 Sep 08: TBA: Florida State at Jacksonville, FL
  • SAT 04 Oct 08: TBA: Texas at Boulder (Homecoming)
  • SAT 11 Oct 08: TBA: Kansas at Lawrence, KS
  • SAT 18 Oct 08: TBA: Kansas State at Boulder (Family Weekend)
  • SAT 25 Oct 08: TBA: Missouri at Columbia, MO
  • SAT 01 Nov 08: TBA: Texas A&M at College Station, TX
  • SAT 08 Nov 08: TBA: Iowa State at Boulder
  • SAT 15 Nov 08: TBA: Oklahoma State at Boulder
  • FRI 28 Nov 08: 12:30 PM: Nebraska at Lincoln, NE

CU Business Networking

cu-business-networking.jpg

Jim Malmberg (graduated in ‘85) has created a more robust CU Business Networking Site for CU alums on the Ning platform.  If you are not familiar with Ning, it is a highly customizable platform for building social networks. Our groups focus will remain on building business relationships and problem solving.

If you are perfectly happy using our Yahoo! Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CUNetworking/) or our LinkedIn group (http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/3476/5617FF09CFAC) then don’t worry. You can continue to utilize both of them without any need to join Ning. On the other hand, if you are looking for a significantly more interactive networking experience with other CU grads, then you may want to check out the new site at http://www.CUNetworking.net. (not to be confused with our Dot COM address). Ning also provides some nice interfacing capability with Facebook.

One of the major benefits of Ning is that you will be able to invite any old CU friends that you keep in contact with to join us. This should propel overall network growth and help all of us expand our business connections.

Feedback: If there are any additional features you would like to see, if the layout needs to be changed, or if there are existing features that you would like to see removed, let Jim know.

Since we have a number of CU faculty members in the group, I will also point out that I have included an event calendar in the Ning group. This should allow you to post campus events in a central location that the entire group will have access to.

Any feedback, please email Jim Malmberg at: jmalmberg@CUNetworking.com

CU has the Smallest Football Game Attendance Among the top 30 Programs in Div 1A

McCartney: Fill Folsom this spring

Former CU coach wants stadium full on April 19

DENVER — Dan Hawkins and Bill McCartney joined forces Thursday hoping to turn a pipedream in to reality.

When addressing a record crowd of more than 1,600 fans at the annual CU football recruiting luncheon at the Adam’s Mark Hotel, McCartney challenged CU fans to learn a lesson from Alabama and turn out in force for the spring football game.

McCartney said when Alabama hired coach Nick Saban a year ago from the Miami Dolphins, one of the first things Saban did was to ask Crimson Tide fans to support the program by showing up to the spring game. More than 92,000 obliged.

McCartney said that level of support paid off in recruiting the 2008 class in Tuscaloosa. Alabama was the consensus No. 1 recruiting class this year by all the major recruiting services. McCartney then asked CU fans if they were capable of the same sort of support for their program.

He asked fans to stand in the hotel ballroom and pledge to bring 50 friends with them to the April 19 game and fill Folsom Field. Most CU spring games in recent years have featured crowds of just a few thousand fans.

McCartney came armed with a little research. He said CU had the smallest stadium and the smallest average attendance in 2007 of the top 30 schools in the recruiting class rankings this year.

“Where are you going to be on April 19?” McCartney asked in an interview afterward. “Why not come there and take this thing to another level?

“I think there is a missing component. If we’re going to go for the national championship, play the great teams, we’re in the same conference with Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska; if we’re going to compete with (Texas) A&M;, we’ve got the best city and the best academics, but the smallest stadium. So let’s fill it every time, starting with the spring game.”

Hawkins latched on to the idea when he addressed the crowd and he made it known he wasn’t joking.

“I’m calling you guys out,” he said. “I’m counting every head there April 19 and there better be 50 grand.”

Notable

CU used 44 of its 56 allowable recruiting visits in this recruiting cycle. It can ‘bank’ six of its remaining visits giving the program 62 available visits for the 2009 cycle. … CU will hold its pro timing day March 19. … During his remarks at the luncheon, Hawkins said he still has several scholarships available and it’s possible a defensive lineman or two could be added to the mix before training camp. … Athletic director Mike Bohn said the buzz created by the 2008 recruiting class led to 104 new season tickets being purchased on national signing day. … Renowned Boulder-based artist Don Coen provided 75 limited edition Buffalo paintings to be auctioned off at the luncheon. Most were sold, raising money designated to help sustain football recruiting efforts. “I love the Buffs and I just wanted to do something for them. So I did,” Coen said.
