First, the event – the 68th annual Western Intercollegiate, one of the most prestigious tournaments in college golf, to be held March 25-27 at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, CA. Hosted by San Jose State, the tournament features 16 teams representing schools from across the United States. The Western Intercollegiate has served as a springboard for many PGA Tour stars – top pros including Tiger Woods, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, Peter Jacobsen, Ken Venturi and Aaron Oberholser all played in the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo.

And now, through this auction, you’ll have a chance to be a part of this historic event. Here’s how it works. The winner of this auction and a friend will get to play in the opening day of the tournament, the traditional practice round collegian-amateur event. You and a friend will be paired with 2 or 3 members of the Colorado Buffaloes golf team in a foursome or fivesome that will compete against other collegian-amateur teams in this opening day event, with dinner and prizes to be awarded at the end of the day.
This auction is for 2 spaces in this opening day tournament including cart if desired, and the dinner that follows. You won’t be watching, you’ll actually be playing the course partnered with the Colorado Buffaloes golf team, and you’ll get to see some of the top college golfers in the country as they tackle an historic championship course. The course, Pasatiempo Golf Club, is a semi-private Alister Mackenzie course build in 1929. The course has been recognized repeatedly as one of the finest courses in the country by top golf publications (currently ranked #55 among all courses in the United States by Golf Magazine), and it’s a rare opportunity to play a course designed by the finest golf course architect in history – MacKenzie’s other courses include Augusta National, Cypress Point, and Royal Melbourne. What exactly is included? The winner gets 2 places in the opening day event – you are bidding on 2 spots, and you and your designated partner will be playing with at least 2 members of the golf team specified in this listing. This event is usually played with 5 golfers in a group, and the fifth slot may be filled by a 3rd member of the same team, a member of a different team, or another amateur, depending on the final participation list, at the discretion of the tournament organizers. Dinner is also included in this auction.
What is the value of this auction? Greens fees at Pasatiempo are usually $200 per person plus cart. With dinner included, a day for two at Pasatiempo would ordinarily be worth about $500, if you can get a tee time at this historic semi-private course. And bidding for this once in a lifetime opportunity opens at just $250 for two! The experience of playing this course with collegiate golfers as part of this historic event is priceless. So use this opportunity to support your school, or to see how your game measures up to today’s college golfers on a top course, and bid often!
Where does the money go? All proceeds from this auction (after eBay fees) go to the San Jose State athletic department, which is sponsoring the tournament, and will go toward paying tournament expenses.
Is my payment tax deductible? Winning bidders that pay over $500 (the value of the event) may be able to claim the excess over $500 as a tax deduction. You should consult with your tax preparer in making a final decision on such a deduction.
Am I part of the real tournament? This auction is only for participation in the traditional first day practice round tournament, and not for the final two days, which are for the collegians only. This event is treated by the schools as a practice round event, and the collegians may hit extra practice shots and putts. All teams do keep score in this event, though, and prizes are awarded to the winning teams. Details about the format of this event will be made available at Pasatiempo the day of the event.
Is anyone eligible? Yes. However, please keep in mind that Pasatiempo is a demanding course, the site of several USGA championships and US Open qualifying round events. All participants should have a USGA handicap.
Can I specify which golfer I want to play with? Friends and relatives of participating collegians can request that they play with a specific member of this golf team, and the tournament will try to honor these requests, though it cannot guarantee any specific players, only the team in this auction.
This auction does not include transportation to or from the event, nor does it include lodging.
